Free Hour of Consulting

Meet one-on-one with a Greenlights nonprofit consultant to get expert advice on issues such as leadership, planning, and fundraising.

As a Greenlights member, your organization is entitled to meet with a member of our consulting team to discuss a specific issue that you are dealing with—or preparing to deal with.

When determining how to best use your free hour of consulting this year, please consider these tips:

DO:

  • DO choose a topic that fits within Greenlights’ Five Practice Areas: Leadership Advancement, Strategy & Planning, Resource Development, Financial Management, and Board Excellence.
  • DO seek to understand best practices around a particular topic and how to apply them to your organization’s needs.
  • DO ask for advice or guidance as you navigate a challenging situation. The consultation is confidential and can be a good way for you to have a sounding board and learn of strategies and best practices that can help you.
  • DO invite up to 3 people from your organization (board or staff) to participate. Greenlights has found that the free hour of consulting is more productive when a few primary stakeholders are able to have a strategic conversation during the appointment.

DON’T:

  • DON’T choose a topic outside of Greenlights’ Five Practice Areas without discussing it with Taylor Overstreet first. Greenlights can provide resources on a number of topics, including nonprofit marketing and communications and database implementation; however, we do not offer consulting outside our areas of expertise.
  • DON’T ask Greenlights to review or approve a specific policy or document. Greenlights can share best practices for developing specific policies; reviewing current or draft documents is not a strategic use of your free hour.
  • DON’T invite more than 3 people from your organization to participate. Greenlights has found that the free hour of consulting is most productive when the conversation is focused on learning rather than consensus-building.
