Media coverage is a critical component of your organization’s communications and fundraising efforts, one that most nonprofits do not take full advantage of. In this unique program, you’ll first receive training from a panel of local media professionals on how to make your nonprofit news shine – from the television screen to the news page. Learn about developing a relationship with the media, framing your organization’s message, and what to do when the media calls you. This in-depth media training includes time for learning and developing your pitch to the media, plus you’ll walk away with a list of media contacts that you can use right away. The training includes a post workshop media tour with our local media partners to put your pitching skills to work right away. Lunch is included with this workshop.
Melanie Fish
Melanie Fish turned a journalism career into a bonanza for Central Texas nonprofits. As the executive producer for Austin’s CBS affiliate, she created Profiles in Power, an awards program and news series honoring Austin’s most powerful women. In her career as a television journalist, she anchored, reported and produced the news. She also produced a Texas Associated Press Best Documentary of The Year. She left television in 2000 to consult with Abu Dhabi TV and focus on her family and community. After founding The Austin Children’s Shelter Guild to support the emergency shelter for abused children, she was honored as one of the 2003 Women on Their Toes—an award for philanthropy. Melanie helped create The 5 Minute Connection for Greenlights during her year in Leadership Austin. She serves on the board of governors for Lifeworks and works as a freelance newspaper reporter.
